We spent two weeks in Phuket and Ko Phi Phi Don (where they filmed the movie The Beach). Ko Samui is an uber expensive resort island close to Ko Phangan (full moon parties). I wanna go back and am planning a stay on Ko Samui. Go to pattaya if you want hookers, although they can be found everywhere, Pattaya has the most visible sex tourism. |

Doesnt post much anymore, but Drew aka:candyass the happy hardcore dj turned NY police officer used to go about twice a year. I think he is about to marry a girl he met on one of his trips. If I see him online this week I will ask him to write up a quick FAQ sheet for you on Thailand travel for gringos.

Off the top of my head... I tend to stay away from the tourist spots for the most part. If you want those types of places, then it should be easy to find. I preferred to go ito the mountains and hang out with the tribes and such. Try to hit the highest temple in the country. Beautiful. It's just outside of Chang Mai in the mountains. Stay away from Phuket unless you just feel like hitting up the touristy spots. Try to get a boat tour of the rocks out in the water. Very cool. Unless you want to test your tongue, do not order anything extra spicy. I did this the first day and wondered why the entire wait staff was watching me. For dessert try the Mango and Sticky Rice... I ended up having it three or four times a day after I tried it. If you go to Chang Mai, ask around where you can find the musician named 'Took'. He plays in little bars and is amazing. He can imitate Clapton, Marley, and a TON of other artists. Really good tunes and a fun crowd. If you ask directions and a local tells you something is one way, don't just assume that it is. They are VERY friendly over there and they don't like to say no to travelers, even if they are sending you in the wrong direction. FYI, a 'Took-Took' is the 3 wheel bike taxis that you will see EVERYWHERE. Take the Took-Tooks anywhere and everywhere you can. Cheapest way and those guys know whats up. Drink the Thai Whiskey... it's sooooo cheap and pretty damn good. Singha is also a decent beer and the standard. Do not even think about finding drugs. If you get caught you won't leave. It so happened I found one guy in a pool hall who offered me 'some shit', which in most other countries is considered weed... I said yes... but there it was hash... and I didn't know it until I finished the joint and had a horribly queezy stomach. Video games, movies, etc... all dirt cheap... all mostly bootlegs. so are the musical instruments. I bought a 13 inch Conga and a 15 inch Conga (VERY nice ones), two flutes, a set of Bongos, and a few other instruments for about $135. Normally they would have cost me near a grand. Clothes are really inexpensive. I love the clothes there. The market in Chang Mai starts around midnight every night and goes all night long. If you like incense, buy some. It's incredibly cheap. Get the one that they use for the spirit houses out in front of their homes. Do not try to buy any large Bhudda statues to bring back. If Thai Customs catches you, they can confiscate them and arrest you. It's not likely, but it is illegal to export Bhuddas out of the country. Of course, if they are really small ones then they will let it slide. You can bargain with them on everything for the most part. And the most important... If you want a Massage, be SURE you go to the Traditional Massage places as opposed to the Ancient Massage places. One is a whore house and the other is a massage parlor. My mother hit the worng one on accident. Funny as hell. Wait... ask around about that last part. I may have the two confused.
