uh yes they are. they can still put XP on the machines even though all the floor models have Vista on them.

if you ask them to put XP on them then they can do so. if some store tells you no then you tell them to fuck off and go elsewhere.

It can indeed mess with your wireless drivers. I found this out the hard way.

Pick a laptop you want, and then before you buy it see if you can download the XP drivers from the website. IF you can, buy it. IF not, then dont buy.

Or, you could just get a 20$ wifi USB or pcmica card.

as a computer technician who used to work for Fry's, I know for a fact it all depended on the laptop you were trying to downgrade. We had sales people all the time promise that we could downgrade the laptop to xp for the simple cost of the operating system.

Time and Time again, we ran into the problem of not finding all the drivers for the components in the laptop. I got SOME of them to take the downgrade but that was only after trial and error with 3rd party drivers and generic issues. It caused conflicts with other drivers and never really functioned properly. The laptops were unstable as hell, period.

The only computer I was able to sucessfully install XP on that still had vista was an older Sony Viao, but it only took XP because it was an older computer with older xp compatible components...

Oh, and a store does not HAVE to downgrade you. And you can go ahead and find another place that says they will. But when you have to go back and get it fixed time after time. You will wish you had just listened to the first store in the first place.

Do what I did, Buy a Macbook

This is what I thought before I went out and bought a new laptop w/o doing my homework. Brought it home, formatted, installed xp, and low and behold half of the hardware didn't work. Went searching the net for the drivers only to find out manufacturers are indeed not making hardward drivers for devices on machines that come pre-installed with vista. It's pretty big bullshit if you ask me.

I eventually got everything working with other models drivers and such, but it was a pain in the anus and took me a week to get everything configured and working. It would've been worth my time to spend the extra 200 bucks on a machine pre-loaded with xp.
