Holden celebrates 60 years with its Coupe 60

For those of you that don't know Holden is the Australian GM counterpart. The Holden Monaro was the basis for the GTO which failed here in the US, mainly due to its Cavalier styling for US models, but had major success down there - mainly due to the NON Cavelier styling. The Pontiac G8 is based off the Holden Commodore. To celebrate 60 years of success Holden introduced its Coupe 60, some say it might be the next Holden based vehicle to be badged as the next GTO in the US. I can only hope.







Melbourne’s auto show is host to Holden’s 60th anniversary celebrations, and to mark the occasion, the Australian brand has revealed its Coupe 60. Designed to combine sports and luxury for the momentous occasion, the Coupe 60 takes from the best of what Holden has to offer.

Shorter than the VE sedan by nearly 60mm, the Coupe 60 combines stout proportions with taut styling that gives both the impression of race-track speed and road-going comfort. Huge 21″ wheels wrapped in high-performance Kumhos give solid traction, which is a necessary considering the 6.0L V8 under the hood. (GM's LS2 engine)

The aggressive look is enhanced by the rectangular side-exiting exhaust pipes jutting out just in front of the rear wheels, while inside the cockpit is inspired by the cars of the Australian V8 Supercars series. Other racing-derived enhancements include a full flat under body, rear under body air diffuser and functional rear deck-lid spoiler.

Special four-point harness restraints at all four seating positions add to the race-feel while still maintaining comfort and safety. Carbon-fiber one-piece bucket seats touched in suede and leather hold the driver and front passenger with ample bolstering. Special details in the interior or highlighted with a distinctive shiny red leather, and metal surfaces are finished in dark gunmetal and satin chrome. The instrument panel is trimmed in leather, while the pillars and headliners are lined in suede.

The designers hope the car will make it to production, and since the Holden line could use a new Monaro (GTO in the States), maybe that’s where this car will find a home, although for the moment it’s tipped to remain a concept only.

If it does come to the US there is nothing more to make that car more beautiful than 2 hood scoops with Ram Air decals on the side of them.

Is this gonna be the 2-door G8GT? Also, why didn't they use the LS3? I'd think about trading in the vette for one if they do it right.

I don't think this will be the 2 door G8 GT. The G8s started production a few months ago and should be hitting showroom floors any day now. As for the LS3 no clue there. Holden was using the LS2s for the Monaros and Commadores. Holden is just saying this is a concept. But hopefully it becomes the new GTO and gets the LS6. As for doing it right, its all up to Pontiac US. We all saw what they did to the styling of the GTO. Maybe they learned from their mistakes.... who knows. I know that Vette owners prefer the feel of the GTO over Vettes, although it was packaged in the bland styling US GTO. I just need a new LSX powered car that looks good.

Yes, nbm or sunset orange metallic. I am still waiting to drive that Z06 btw.
