Most yoga studios here teach Power/Flow Yoga, the westernized version of Vinyasa, which does involve an aerobic element that will tone muscle, and burn a little fat. But yoga's more about the mind-body connection and meditation than working out. If you're just looking to burn fat and keep it off, stick to heavy cardio. For the best results, workout in the morning, and hit the weights before your cardio. Doing so will increase your burn rate by 25%.

Why does doing weights before cardio increase the burn rate? I prefer the hatha style yoga better than the more aerobic style offered at gyms...Slow movements are better for me to help me concentrate on my breathing...

yoga, is great, been doing it off and on for about for years now, way more flexible, relaxed, but toning and losing weight NO! now, as far as spot reduction, it'll sound campy...but the ORIGINAL 82 jane fonda workout...my mom used to have it, lost it bought it on e-bay and dammit, my thighs are slimmer, stomach looking better, and ass is more round...and hips are REDUCING *yay* i also bought the workout record,..so they say there is no "SPOT" reduction, but the way jane fonda does the calisthenics with the aerobics WORKS....of course only in conjunction with doing the workout at least three times a week( i go for five-seven) and eating less.

You want to burn weight, do interval training. You can do it with sprinting, eliptical, or bicycle. It hurts like hell, only takes 5 minutes, and works better than any heavy cardio you can find. 30 second walking speed warmup 20 second sprint (go hard as you can) 10 second walking speed cooldown 20 second sprint 10 second walking speed cooldown repeat the 20/10 cycle 8 times, then do about two minutes walking pace cooldown. It hurts like hell at first, and you'll only get through a few of the cycles in the first week, but it seriously cuts weight and builds cardio strength better than anything else. -Sean

Lol I know how to lose weight by working out. I'm bored with that. I've done it all and I am ready for something else. Tired of weight lifting, tired of running, tired of areobics classes, etc. The place I have been going to on and off for a little while does Power yoga called American Power Yoga. The humidity is about 80%, not as hot as hot yoga, which I have also done. Hot yoga was interesting but I like the heat and humidity the way it is at this place. Also I have a bad neck and back so I was hoping I could work on that as well as tone up. I don't need to lose a lot, maybe 10 pounds. There are a lot of regulars there with very toned bodies, so I don't get it? |

Others have already touched on it, but yoga is way more for the mental aspect and energy flow, meridians, than it is for losing weight. Kundalini yoga is meant to unlock the power stored at the base of your spine and to allow it to flow correctly through all seven chakras and out of the body. I have done power/bikram yoga quite a bit, and have seen the physical benefits from it. The biggest benefit you can expect from yoga is going to be flexibility and getting in touch with your true inner spirit. I highly suggest getting into a meditation regiment to go along with yoga. The meditative aspects of yoga can be built upon very easily. Unrelated to the original post but those interested in addressing the inner energy flow might want to take a gander at www.emofree.com watch the video and make your own determinations. |
