The increased temp in the room allows for the skin and other tissues below the surface layer to get warm a lot quicker. When you add the deep breathing, pranayana, to the begining you are then starting to heat up the inside using the external heat as another source. If you attempt hatha/bikram without beiong properly warmed then you will definitely hurt yourself. Another you to know is that hatha yoga is the ORIGINAL yoga, everythig else is an adaptation of it but has been morphed through the years. Hatha hasn't been touched since its first onset over 5000 years ago.

But as you said....to each their own.

Another thing I will add is that I have done another hot yoga before, and another non-hot yoga. None of them focused on the pranayana breathing at all. You will see some overlapping asanas from one yoga to another. But to not focus on prana seems to really water down yoga, considering you are trying to tap into prana in the first place. Yoga is mind first, body second!!!

I have some DVDs for all different kinds of yoga, but I would have never looked into it further if my friend hasn't made me realize there is more to yoga than just stretching.

Well, I didn't really phrase that right. I didn't mean for it to sound like I don't think yoga is hard. I know it's a workout and yes it does work your muscles. It's not just stretching. You are right.

I just have this personality where my workouts have to be really high energy. Holding poses and standing in one spot... although challenging... does not provide high enough energy to entertain me.

I also never really got the whole meditative part of yoga.

But if I had time and money to blow I would go to a couple of classes a week to stay limber.

I get what yr saying. I really am not interested in being still for very long AT ALL!!

And when I go jogging I can really meditate better than sitting in a pose, I think it has to with the rhythm I get when I jog.

Can't you just do yoga in the middle of the summer, outside by White Rock lake and achieve the same effect?

I have practiced in Denton at Yoga Hut, Sunstone and Yogasport in Dallas. I love how strong and centered it makes me. Each studio takes a different approach to the spiritual side, but it's definitely an amazing physical and mental workout. I highly recommend and give two thumbs up!

This is a common misconception. There are certain poses that you hold longer than others for the specific purpose of deepening your stretch. However, yoga teachers that know what they're doing, combine a series of poses that elevate your heart rate for more of a focus on cardio... a 'vinyasa flow' is what they call it. It's very active!
