| Rocket Radio got some jail mail with some thanks for some of you....
Over the years, I've gotten my fair share of jail mail at KNON. At first I was a bit creeped out by it, but over time I realized they all had the same thing to say...... That Rocket Radio is the one and only thing they have to look forward to all week, and is their only resource for the music they like to listen to. I've grown to appreciate jail mail. I truly believe that life without music is cruel and unusual punishment, so it makes me a little glowy to help people keep their sanity while doing that whole reform thing. That, and the artwork they send is really rockin' I've even had a few people comment in person that at one point they had been in jail, and while they were there they listened each week, and they just wanted to thank me for giving them something fun during their time. Take it however you will...... Anyway.... Enough of my schpiel on that.... I got one tonight that would be of interest to you folks at DDM because it mentions appreciation of many of you & your friends... I thought I would share. Greetings Rocket Radio: Sorry I don't have a pledge for you. I'm writing from the max-security unit at Carswell federal prison. (I know... excuses, excuses). I do have a bit of freetime, though, and sending a collage as a non-monetary contribution. I just wanted you to know how much I love your show. I was a house DJ (tending towards tech/acid/electro/discopunk) before my arrest. Then I spent two years in county jail with no music whatsoever (except when I got transported to court the US marshals were always listening to Guns N' Roses or Def Lepard, which I have to admit in my extreme state of beat-deprivation I sort of got into but that still doesn't really count). I had never been to Texas before and please excuse my ignorance but I feared it would be all Garth Brooks and Lynard Skynard. So you can imagine how happy I was to find KNON and Rocket Radio. I've enjoyed all your guest DJs, too, espectiall the Negativland show, Sean Anderson, and JV. I had a few records produced by JV and had forgotten he was from this area. Please have him on again sometime. I have a few track requests, too. Since I can't call I'm just going to list them - pick, choose, and of course play whatcha want. I would really love to hear Jay Tripwire, but I don't know how likely it is you'll have any of his tracks. So... Imogen Heap, The Knife, Adam Freeland's "Seven Nation Army" remix. Also Jamiraquai - I know its not exactly Texas-style or Rocket Radio style, but I have a sentimental nostalgic connection to it. I feel like I have musical amnesia from not hearing or thinking about it for so long, so that's a pretty random list but its what popped into my head. In case you're wondering what I'm doing here... no, I'm not a psycho killer. Ten years ago I was involved with a group of eco-saboteurs and animal liberationists. It was our policy to never cause harm to living beings, but because we damaged government property for political reasons, we have been designated as "terrorists." So here I am with, supposedly, the most dangerous women in the country. The big advantage to max-security, though, is that I have my own room so I can bust out dance moves at 4 am (This would undoubtably be hazardous to my health with the usual four trying-to-sleep roomates). I do get confused looks sometimes from guards who have to peek in with a flashlight every hour and log whatever I'm doing. But whatever. If I can't go out on a Friday night (or ever, anywhere) at least I can have some fun here. So thanks for playing great music. It definitely helps get me through each week. Cheers, NAME WITHHELD PS: Love Carl Craig's remix of Poor People Must Work" (True that, even if its just for $0.12 / hr like me.) Dub is yummy. Last minute PPS: Last night's show with Woody and Richard was fantastic. I know Chicago style gospel house isn't your favorite genre so I appreciate you putting it on. Honestly, I've never been too into either. But this place blackens the heart and that set was a welcome infusion of sunshine. Please pass my compliments onto your guest DJs, if you get a chance. The rest of the show rocked, too, of course. Thanks again. Take care.

Touching.... I mean, I think it is a good thing. It seems you are making the difference in someones life that made some bad choices and were involved with the wrong people, and now they are paying dearly for it. I'd feel good about it. |

That's really cool. I've gotten some great jail mail over the years... and some nutty ones too. Hell, I even had an ex con come after me with a knife at a bar one time and I still to this day have a small blade in my car at all times... just in case the nut shows up again. I think it's ridiculous that this person is in max-security... for terrorism of all things. Reminds me of my wife's ordeal a few years back. She spray painted a peace sign on a wall of a vacant warehouse when she was 18. Graffiti was considered gang related activity, so she was marked as a gang member and they wanted to lock her up in State prison for 2 years. Thank goodness for good lawyers and a DA with some common sense who saw that she was no threat to society. Hopefully this girl learned from her mistake and when she gets out will find other ways to get her point across. Great read Sabrina. Keep on keepin on. I still need to make it over there one night to play. Since I am gig free now, maybe I can do it soon.

Wow, just wow. Almost make a man cry to know that someone out there really needed to hear that. Kind of flabbergasting.
