It's a micro-blogging platform intended to broadcast and receive small announcements via different devices, such as the web or a phone.

It really only serves a purpose if you have announcements to make that other people are interested in following.

For example, following Obama on his campaign trail, or the WFAA weather man giving you daily announcements about weather conditions, or where your favorite local dj or band will be performing tonight, or groups of people collaborating on a project, etc, etc...

Otherwise, yea, if you have no purpose for it, you are basically just announcing to your friends mundane shit, such as what you ate and when you last took a dump...

I thought it was stupid at first too. But it allows us to update when our pictures are up on our website or the Dallas Observer website. And let's people know what clubs we are at while it's happening.

But if you live a boring life, you'd be posting that you're taking a dump in a parking lot.

I think microblogs are just a little bit ahead of their time. Most people generally don't understand them and are confused as to what purpose they could serve.

The early adopters of micro blogs were people in the social technologies industry and strategic online marketers, who not only use the tools to broadcast announcements, but use the data generated from people to derive social trending analytics, which really help marketers keep a pulse on social behaviors, interests, etc...

Let's face it, when you don't know what its used for, after the 5th post about what you ate and what your dump looked like, you generally start to post about things that interest you, which is a gold mine for marketers

Sounds like a spam attack just waiting to happen, if not already. I get enough of that shit in my e mails, I don't need more.

Not necessarily. We analyze twitter traffic (amongst many other social networknig services data) to determine people's interests, ideas and concerns regarding social networking tools and help derive incremental feature sets for the next minor releases of our software platforms.

We don't have to spam you when the social trending data tells us what you want most out of a product or service.

The only people I care about following are the Dallas Fire Dept, Dallas Office of Emergency Management, Red Cross, Red Cross Dallas Chapter, and NASA and a lot of their projects. Otherwise I use it to promote my stuff, etc. And fun updates here and there

Yea, there are those that start following you when you mention certain things, which if you are using that to find out what people are thinking about a particular subject, it's kind of fruitless and gay, since all that data can be analyzed without having to follow people.

Keywords I've used that got people following me were: SalesForce, Eloqua and Lloyd Kaufman lol...

i agree mary..kinda stupid if people are using like your friends are above...makes it sound just like the mood status and quote on myspace

I didnt like it either until reading this thread to see some valid reasons to use it
