Phone Nerds: Palm Pre?

Okay, so the Palm Pre is coming out next week. I'm thinking of picking one up as I hate my Centro, and have to have a Palm for work.

From what I've seen it looks pretty cool, but what does the DDM Teknomassiv think about it?

More techno junk imho. Isn't the palm OS almost phased out?

Every few months a new iPhone "killer" is introduced or the latest blackberry this or that is announced. Its not like a lot of these companies are fixing something that's broken or introducing revolutionary ideas.

I will say the keyboard on it is not too shabby and I've been a fan of that sort of layout. I would wait for the first hand reviews by consumers themselves before making the jump.

its faster and has way more features than any previous OS

this phone is their flagship right now and is jammed with all kinds of bad assery

if you dont get a blackberry I would get the Pre

And yeah, the WebOS thing looks way cool. I hope they're as open as they say they'll be with the SDK.

While this is technologically cool, I find it's application somewhat impractical in a smartphone. The thing I love about blackberries and my G1 are the standard USB charging. I have 3 USB chargers (living room, bedroom, and my room on the rig), plus countless cables to plug it into computers, and they are quite small. With the Touchstone charger, you have a base that occupies a fair amount of space and isn't that portable. I charge my phone lying on my bed so the alarm can wake me up, Touchstone wouldn't allow this.

i do love the iphone because there's an app for that.

but seriously the pre seems pretty cool. i'm not gonna switch- but i'm always open to whatever works the best. the iphone works flawless on my macs and with outlook on my pc. plus the push email has been gold for the last 8 months or so.

at the Google IO conference today, they gave out free HTC Magic phones to all attendees. Pretty damn cool if you ask me.

Coupled with the fact that Dell is about to start selling netbooks preloaded with Android for 149.99 I'm pretty stoked. I just ordered 3.

The Pre charges via Micro USB as a standard, which is nice given all other previous Palm devices had the proprietary HotSync connector. The Touchstone is an added option/accessory...and a very cool one at that but a bit pricey at $70. Also dig the fact that the Pre has a standard 3.5mm headphone jack.

One thing that always drew me to Palm smartphones over the iPhone, Blackberry, etc is the ability to multi task (i.e. check email while listening to music). One of the WedOS designers was involved with the iPhone, so now you have great functionality combined with some nice eye candy. I've read that the Pre will have an emulator of sorts so all your old Palm supported apps are not left out in the cold.

I'm right in the middle of a 2 year contract with the Centro but think that extra year will allow me to see any possible kinks worked out of the 1st gen Pre and possibly see a price drop from the $200 (after rebate/contract.etc) price. Other than that, I'd probably jump all over this thing. If you are going to get it at launch, it's my understanding that Best Buy will be honoring the mail in rebate in-store as a direct price cut, so you don't actually have to hassle with any mailing.

The Pre is open source, just like the Iphone is, if the SDK is released with the phone and made freely available, then there are endless apps that can be created.

It runs on WebOS so I think the language should be very similar to Iphone's programing.

the iPhone SDK is not open source. Android on the other hand is.

There has def been a lot of hype over the Pre with analyst saying Palm might not be able to meet demand fast enough. We'll see.

Mobile is awesome in some ways and no so awesome in other ways. The problem with so many OS's is that you have to now have several branches of code for each OS or focus on one specific OS. which is why many companies focus on iPhone development because it really doesn't make sense to spend money on other OSes.

well... on the iphone you can listen to music and do everything but take a phone call (it pauses the music). then... here in a couple of weeks, all the apps will have background push service as to allow things like IM or Skype work in the background w/o draining your battery. so when somebody does IM you, it only works when something is pushed to your phone rather than being turned on the whole time draining the battery.

as for the pre coming down in price. that thing is WAY more expensive than any other smart phone on the market. full price is $850, so the subsidized $200 ain't coming down for a LOOOOONG time.
