fixies scare the shit out of me...i guess that's because there are more hills in NYC and more situations you can get in that require some coasting if you're not really in control of your ride. i rode down the west side of the williamsburg bridge on my friend's fixed gear...when i reached the delancy end going what i percieved to be about 45 mph, i thought i was surely about to die....zooming taxis and buses and a bike w/nothing but a front brake and crank spinning almost out of control. i don't know how i survived. granted, i'm sure my female onlookers thought i looked like a fucking badass. ...and i do think trackstands look fucking pimp -- they're hard to do w/freewheel roadbike unless you're pointed up a bit of an incline. rite now i have an old 10 speed that i ride around w/no stress.

Bend was voted the best mountain biking town in the US. There is more bike traffic here than car traffic. You should see all the sick ass cruisers that people have here.

YOu should def come check out Bend. Its only about 2 hours from portland. Bend is a really beautiful town. Free concerts every sunday at the Les Schwab Ampitheater. And we get big name acts on the weekends too like Korn, Ben Harper, NIN, just to name a few.

I still ride a Haro BMX & I look 12 on it. Then again, put me on any bicycle and I look like a Viet Cong.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fixed-gear_bicycle A fixed-gear bicycle, fixed wheel bicycle or "fixie", is a bicycle without the ability to coast because the sprocket is screwed directly on to the hub and there is no freewheel mechanism. Whenever the rear wheel is turning, the pedals turn in the same direction, this allows a cyclist to stop without using a brake, by resisting the rotation of the cranks, and also to ride in reverse. Track cycling in a velodrome has always used fixed-gear track bikes, but fixed-gear bicycles have recently become popular for road use - a trend generally seen as been led by bicycle messengers. Most fixed gear bicycles have just one gear ratio.
