i like it but it doesn't get played out much.
no minimal techno wklies.
=/
noticed that a few of you here aren't particularly fond of it. I don't know much about techno in general to begin with, but I've been getting into it lately and was just wondering why some of you who are more familiar with techno don't like it. like I said, I don't know much, but I've heard some minimal stuff and can see myself liking it at times.
reasons?

It's not that I'm fabulous, I just really don't give a fuck about being unfabulous.

Minimal has it's place for me. I like it on headphones at the house, but for a dancefloor at peak time? No.
A lot of the backlash against minimal is due to the fact that it is trendy and in vogue right now. A whole bunch of the biggest names in techno have made the switch to minimal from more banging type of stuff. People like Adam Beyer, Surgeon, Cari Lekebusch, Chris Liebing, Sven Vath and so on. It's looked at(by harder techno purists) as yet another bandwagon to jump on or as an easy listening version of techno for the masses. Whether this is true or not is a matter of tastes. The argument against this mindset is techno has to evolve as it was getting stagnant stylistically and evolution usually takes a step back before moving forward.
Minimal has been around for quite a while. Robert Hood pioneered it in Detroit and Richie Hawtin took it from there. A lot of the German sources for minimal started coming out with the KOMPAKT(clicky) label out of Cologne. A few of the earlier German guys are Thomas Brinkman, Mike Inc.(wolfgang voight), Reihardt Voight, Juergen Paap.
You burned it , YOU DONKEY!
it's not the best during peak hour imo.
i do like it to a certain extent. when done well of course.

I like minimal techno if I'm at home or if it's a low key night at a club.
But I don't like it if I'm in the mood for a nightclubbing dance-a-thon.![]()

I've never liked minimal techno, it bores me to death. Minto used to play these minimal CDs up at Core when Reggie owned the place. He got so into them and I'd just stand there waiting for it to do something interesting; 30 minutes later Minto's raving about the CD and I feel like I just downed a handful of Ambien. I guess my backlash against minimal started pretty much the first time I heard it. I mean I don't hate the stuff, it just does nothing for me whatsoever. It's right about on the same level as most deep house for me, it's elevator music.
I'm all for the evolution of techno, but it sucks that instead of the harder techno evolving into different branches of the hard stuff it just died(for the most part). There are still people making new and interesting hard techno, but very few of them have a big 'name' to sell the product so it's become even more of a niche market than before. Plus, as Mentallo mentioned, the hard techno big guns moved into minimal so all the copycats are following them into the minimal market instead of sticking with what they were doing before.
Listen, if you like minimal techno, great. There are guys like Minto, Maetrik, and others around town that have been pushing the minimal sound for years and I respect their passion for the music. It's just not my cup of tea.
And whats wrong with this?just downed a handful of Ambien.

sleepy music i.e. minimal is just that-sleepy. Faster and harder (the meth analogy) always wins in the end.![]()

I admit to bashing it a bit because it is very trendy and I feel that people really don't know the roots of it, like Robert Hood, Dan Bell and other fine German artists. Plus, these days there is a lot of garbage minimal out there, like house, which wasn't the case a few years back. The market is being saturated with sub-par, cookie cutter minimal, imo.
I usually open with minimal, which you can check out on 3.4.07 at Minc, starting around 8pm (/ends shamless plug), but I am very choosey about my minimal, I strive for the best stuff out there. About midway through my set, I move to edgier stuff.
I find the prog jocks that have crossed over to minimal to a bit of a bore, thay play their minimal like prog, which is a bit lame (ie Sasha and the likes). They don't understand that you can't play techno the same way.
**Alta and Molecule threw down some really banging stuff when we hung out a few weeks back. You people should check them out.
