do you stalk it out before actually purchasing them or is it a spare of the moment more impulsive type of purchase?

usually i'll know by skimming through the tune if i want it / work with what I play.
also knowing what goes good mainly for a Mix, Early spots at clubs and Peak Time.
if that makes sense.
When i buy music online I add music to my crate first (beatport) and then go through what I've added at the end and make a final decision. This way If I hear something that stands out to me I can just add it and then spend time seeing if i really cannot live without it later. This way I can keep listening to music and keepp the searching process moving instead of getting hung up on one song i've got to listen to a few times cause i'm not %100.
As far as impulsive buys go, sure ....i do that sometimes but usually I make sure that what I'm getting sounds like something i'd rock and leave it at that.

Me too. I'm pretty reactionary when it comes to listening to new songs and very forgiving on details that may otherwise put a track on the "pass" list. So I give it some time. A lesson that didnt come cheap, though. I have about a thousand records that were bought on impulse alone.
The bass keeps coming and coming and coming and coming and coming and coming and going and going and going and going and going and going and DROP!

Saturdays 8-10 2hours of tunes w/ Mike X and Myself
I third that process. I do miss spending hours on end in vinyl shops listening to plate after plate however...
One thing that gets me about listening to trax online is you can only listen to what they want you to hear. I wish you could listen to the intro, the outro, the big break down, and a bit of the meat. That would help in making more educated decisions.
Also, the quality of the samples with the online stuff is piss poor. Half the time, what I buy is either much better than I thought, or much worse.
The convenience of online is amazing however and outweighs those few gripes I mentioned.
Nothing like fishing for tunes at 3 am when you get back from the club... all tore up and shit.

for me it's either write it myself, promo music from different labels, or tracks passed to me by friends (that they've written or are going to release on their label).

I have two accounts on stompy. One I use as a crate account (stuff I'm considering, not sure of) and one is my purchase account. At any given time, I've got between 150 to 250 tracks sitting in my crate account. There are always tracks that are gonna be those tracks you hear that immediately resonate with you and that you buy immediately. Everything else I let sit in the crate for a few weeks. If after about a month or two, I haven't bought them, that's usually a good indicator that I probably never will (unless I just have $200 I want to blow) so I usually delete them. I buy probably 5 to 12 tracks a week I'd guess. Don't buy quite as much as I used to since we get so many promos sent to us now.
