From what I've gathered, editing is easier in Cubase but the instruments are better in Logic.
I'm no pro in either app though. i'm just a casual Cubase user and I only mess with Logic for collabs.
So I am about to get a new mac book and am trying to decide which production software to load on it. Ableton is a given, but I want something to wire to it. From what I can tell on the Cubase website, there are quite a few features that are similar, if not identical, to Logic. I couldn't find a demo version on the site though. So, I would be buying blind if I got Cubase.
Anyone used both of these? What is your impression, if so?
Sorry if there is another thread discussing these two apps. I didn't find one in the search.

i learned cubase exclusively so im biased. i have worked in logic quite a bit as well though. you using any hardware?

they both work great. if i had the choice and was starting from scratch... Logic hands down.

I've been using Cubase on the Mac for almost 15 years now and i really love it - easy to use and no setup BS so i can get right to work. But there's one thing that continues to bug me about it - as well as other cubase users: Stability. It's rocksolid on the PC, but on the Mac it's buggy and loves to crash. Waiting around for Steinberg to publish an update is painful. It's also been mentioned by a lot of plugin developers that the VST platform is unstable.
I've used Logic and aside from a bit of a learning curve and the lack of VST compatability, it's the best DAW for the Mac handsdown. It's easy on the CPU, easy to use and has amazing editing as well. Plus the seamless integration with ProTools and the industry standard score editor are a big plus.
If i hadn't been paying for Cubase all these years, i'd use Logic. Maybe in the next few years i'll finally make the switch. Hope that helps :-)
there both as good as the people using them

i use both cubase 4 and logic pro.
Both are great... i guess ive been using logic a bit more these days though.
Only thing to really consider is that Logic does not use VSTs... however you can get something that will wrap VSTs in AU so that they will work.. have not tried it though... im a hardware junkie.

pretty much said it. cubase is GREAT on the pc but for mac, i would probably go with logic as cubase is "ported" or "emulated" on the mac or something. i am not super computer whiz 9000, and even tho this was explained to me, i dont understand the concept well enough to reitterate here. but, basically, cubase doesn't run "natively" or w/e on the mac. maybe they fixed it with 5. tbh, i just installed 5 on my pc and havne't gotten around to getting it on my mac yet.. maybe i will give it a try and see what it's all about..
if u go with cubase, logic IS still a GREAT program to learn - even if u dont use it as ur main DAW. it is used in so many industries and seamlessly integrates with so many programs/applications. i would just suggest learning it first as it is just has a wierd way of doing things compared to ur typical cubase/protools type layout. stupid analogy, but it's kinda like learning to snowboard before skiing.. learn to ski first and snowboarding can be the hardest damn thing in the world.. but board first and, for most, skiing is a no-brainer. (just my opinon) ^_^;
but, tbh, if u are dedicated enough, you will take even the crappiest of programs and make it do what u want it to do. they both have the capability to pop out some amazing work - the rest is up to u.![]()

lets just say that while I have supported Steinberg and purchased student editions of Cubase 4 & 5....... I've gotten lots and lots and lots and lots of VSTi instrument packs from dark, un-named sources.... and that's another reason why choosing Cubase is easy for me. CB5 is so elegant and smooth and the flow is straight-forward. you can dig as deep as you want into advanced functions or stick to simple midi editing.. either way you'll appreciate how polished the whole interface is
but in conclusion I think anyone who says that either one of these fine DAW programs is hands-down better than the other is just a fanboy. whatever type of system you're already running basically should be deciding factor when it comes down to which is better for you... b/c while cubase does in fact run on Mac, it doesn't run anywhere near as smooth & stable as it does on PC. and Logic is made for Mac & Mac-users... which gets on my nerves. cuz Mac users are known for.. well, everyone knows what the prototypical mac-user is defined as. I don't even have to come up with mean nasty names for them because they kind of define themselves..
HAH isn't that funny, a Mac program known for instability!! ::rimshot!::

i used both in the past and i settled on Logic. i moved to macs last year and i really like the integration. the ability to tie into garage band as well was a plus. i have began to use garage band for initial ideas and basic demo tracks. i have been working on learning Logic to test for Apple Certification.
Cubase is dope though.
I still think in the end you just have to go to GC or run the demo's on your setup and see what you like better. people can talk for days about which is better but it still boils down to you in the end as far as making a final choice.
