Yeah they're pretty dumb IMO.
I did like the ones a few years back that had really graphic crashes but they got pulled because they scared people.
I'm amazed people still buy the things; they're overpriced, unreliable and expensive to own. If you're looking for a euro, get a used BMW. It will last longer and actually retain some of it's value.

A series of stupid releases... the Phaeton? Are you fucking kidding me? $90K for a VW? It's a Bentley w/a VW badge. They're great buys now but wtf? Who greenlighted that shit? The Toureg? Same problem... you could buy a Mercedes for the same price. The Passat failed to compete w/BMW.
Reliability is an issue but I had 2 Jettas (still have one) bought brand new that have been exceptionally reliable. The '04 is about to roll over 100K miles. Burn through tires like a motherfucker but that's all me and how I drive (plus I always get a discount when they need to be replaced 15K miles early).
the A4 1.8t is the Jetta 1.8t w/little connected circles not a Passat... it probably remains true for the other engine sizes because the bodies are directly comparable in size and shape (though the Passat is pretty much a grown up Jetta)
the 1.8t is a lot of fun ftr... if one didn't do something stupid and not by the manual
the Passat probably was supposed to directly compete with an Audi model but not sure which... but the more "economic" BMWs as well. They were good cars but at their price you could get the audi or bwn in the same class for little more... especially when you take the conspicuous consumption factor into account. VW should have either used the Bentley brand or spun off a new one ala Lexus.
