    Healthcare

Just a general rant. Wife went into the ER in the middle of the night for a pinched nerve in her neck. Talked to the NP for two minutes and the Doctor for 30 seconds. No painkillers dispensed and 1 prescription written. Total time in ER was 25 minutes.

    Bill with Insurance-$800

    Yeah, right.
Do you even know anything about paper? It's not like steel. YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU PUT PAPER IN A FURNACE? YOU RUIN IT!

    Yeah, right.
Yea. Horribly unfair that 2 highly skilled individuals are available and open for you to randomly drop by in the middle of the night, then want to be compensated for their time.

You do realize thats 1600 dollars an hour right.... (not including what insurance paid)

Let's assume that 800 was the full amount paid.
Lets also assume that both the NP and MD are paid at the average payscale for a Texas hospital
    ER NP = 79000 annually
    ER MD = 104000 anually

Adding both their hourly wages together comes out to 87 dollars. Divide that by two since he spent 30 minutes in the ER (im not even taking into account the time actually spent with the patient) and you come out to a real compensation to the NP and MD for time spent with patient...

    Total compensation $43.50

I don't know where you pulled your numbers, however, they are exceptionally low. That said you aren't including the cost of the facility, available equipment, needed support staff (janitor, check in/out desk person, various back office folks to handle paperwork, lab personel, ect.)

The amount you pay doesn't go just to the Doctors and Nurse you see. Way to over simply the situation.

Way to make it complex. They shouldn't be getting that much money, it's ridiculous, any math you do is gonna lead to that conclusion.

Of course I'm oversimplifying it. You oversimplified by saying that it was cool to pay that much because the two people that helped you were the ones who needed to be compensated.
Even still, with an average compensation for time of work performed that leaves an estimated 757 dollars left over to pay those additional costs. If we are working on a 30 minute timeline, 757 is MORE than enough to pay those costs.

As far as the numbers, they are accurate based on payscale.com for Texas salary averages.

ER's are incredibly overpriced. There are a multitude of reasons for it but the main thing is that hospitals are for profit. If they can charge and people will pay, they will. It's just like any other business. One of the big issues is that people DONT pay. If a hospital doesnt get paid, they have to charge more.

The gripe really shouldnt be with the hospital itself, it should be with the people who dont pay their hospital bills. It's all cyclical though, the higher the cost, the less people can pay; the less people can pay, the higher the cost. The whole system is pretty much fucked.

you're right, I shouldn't complain. We should have paid more. $1200 for 5 minutes of work seems more fair. I'll let them know.

Seriously, can you just permaban erniebanks?

I get the whole "don't feed the troll" bit, and yea his trolly-ness gets us to post more(if only to call him a dumbass), but really, if DDM is relying on trolls to survive and up the post counts, shut the site down before it drops down to the next level of crappiness.

Might as well let some pron bots on the forums, at least then we'd get half-intelligent posts.
I'd really like to [verb] with you sometime. You have a/an [adjective] [body part].

Almost every doctor's office and ER I've gone to has some sort of "discount" for uninsured patients which begs the question....Why even bother to list stupidly high rates if no one is expected to pay them?
Life itself is only a vision; a dream. Nothing exists except empty space and you. And you, are but a thought.
