Because it creates the collision of microscopic particles in the same way scientists believe that all of the base elements in the periodic table were created. In theory this will allow us to create brand new elements that never existed before.

The doomsday scare comes from the fact that scientists also believe that this is how black holes are formed. So they have a theory that says as soon as the particles collide at such a high speed they will create a black hole that could swallow the entire Earth in a millisecond.

The Steven Hawkins types of the word say dont worry about it the black hole if created by this machine would be so small it would collapse on itself before it has a chance to swallow the earth.
