    Dual monitor setup question

Ok so I want to set up a dual monitor display here in my office. I have a nVidia GeForce 8300GS Video Card 128mb it has a vga and dvi port.Im currently running a 22" off the dvi My question is can I just get a y dvi splitter and run dual monitors like that or do I have to get a dvi-vga adapter and run the second monitor off that side?

when you go to the display properties in windows you can specify if you want to extend the desktop to the other monitor or just ghost the image on both monitors, you will need an adapter depending on your configuration

Assuming you want the monitors to display different content, you'll need to hook the 2nd to your VGA port.

    Re: Dual monitor setup question

there are two different DVI port types on Video cards. I believe the 8300 series is a DVI-I, which will only send video to one monitor. You will have to use a VGA monitor to use the second port.

The other type of DVI is the DVI-D and it is a Dual DVI output off of one port. It usually comes with a splitter cable and is found on the higher end graphics cards like the Nvidia Quattro series.

Also the New Macbook pro's use a special proprietary Dual DVI connector with optional splitter cable.
