If you really want to fuck with them... say you totally agree. White people do have a knapsack of things other races don't have, because we're fucking better than the others.
I've started doing capoeira four nights a week M-Th, while concurrently cutting out any caffeine that isn't from tea, and for some reason I'm also not getting more than 5 hours of sleep a night. I woke up after a shitty night's sleep and went to the gym at 8 this morning, and now I'm trying to keep myself awake so I can sit through a two hour class discussing an essay I've already discussed in two other courses at UNT.
I think I'm going to just take the non-feminist/inconsiderate asshole side in the discussion, because so far everyone keeps gladhanding and agreeing with each other. I want a fucking fight.
The essay is on how all white people have an "invisible knapsack" of privilege that most of us are never aware of, giving us tools and abilities that most non-whites don't have. Help me come up with some fucked up shit to say in class (aside from something stupid like yelling "NIGGER") to get people angry.

White people have been discriminated against more than any other race.
Start with that and see where it all goes.

ask them how this knapsack creates reverse discrimination. as a white male under affirmative action you are limited in financial aid & welfare situations, even when deserving of aid.
if our society is truly color blind then isn't it unfair to hire a person of color over a whitey? are we less sexist to hire a less qualified young lady over an old white guy with experience?
government contracts are given preferentially to minority or women owned businesses. if given our current president's racial status, hasn't society proven that we have overcome enough hurdles and now its time to try out fair & balanced?
by generalizing with an assumed "knapsack" aren't we encouraging this kind of reverse discrimination by avoiding treatment of people as diverse individuals?
rural america is full of poor white people. reconstruction era was full of starving white sharecroppers homesteading next door to sharecroppers of color who had the same paltry means. generalizations based on assumed entitlement keeps these ppl from realizing ambitions held by the educated "middle class".
enjoy your fight, sparkles.

Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.
is it illegal for a white guy with a huge company to create another company with a black guy for the sole purpose of getting contracts?
Good talking points folks, I'll see if I can get punched in the face.

Yep. Sean's definitely at UNT. Sounds familiar! The essay is on how all white people have an "invisible knapsack" of privilege that most of us are never aware of, giving us tools and abilities that most non-whites don't have.
will the academic prescription of white guilt lead to even more revisionist history?
some texas schools don't even learn about the alamo because it might offend bilingual students. wtf on that. santa ana kicked davy crockett's a55. why would it offend brown ppl?
we are thankful that slavery was abolished. however, the civil war was STARTED over tariffs & rich vs. poor stuff. the abolition issue wasn't officially brought in till many moons after the start & the freeing of the southern slaves actually caused some rioting by union troops (e.g. the NY irish).
the revisions have begun but we still aren't putting smallpox blankets in the history books.
where is the balance? how do we know when we get there? & how do keep the pendulum from swinging too far to the other extreme?

the knapsack is a metaphor for entitlement. as long as the wealthy 1% isn't held accountable, then racial strife continues. they are very much related.
hurricane katrina wasn't a dismissal of colored skin but ignoring the reality of the poor and blind acceptance of census numbers that deeply underestimated the number of ppl who had no funds to get out safely.
when the race card got thrown down, all the attempts to equalize the economics of the rescue stopped cold.
concrete fact was traded for nostalgic abstract.

I certainly hope so, but I don't think it's guilt so much as fact. Art & film history is so patriarchal and white male-dominated that certain minority and feminist groups have rewritten history books and called them the "Herstory" of art & film. Pretty interesting stuff.
i don't think revisionist history is a good thing ever, even as a feminist.
when we re-write what happened to fit what is currently pc, we kinda fuk up how we all learn from the mistakes of the past. dontcha think?
i totally agree that art & history has been white male dominated for too long. but if we use their tactics we are as bad as them.
we should blame alexander the great considering he put all the prehistory eggs in one basket which burned to the ground by a bunch of high minded revisionists. made it a lot easier to pretend that matriarchy never existed even though archaeology guarantees it was predominant for a good long time over many continents.
here grrrl.... i think you'll like this:

I'm a huge fan of the Guerrilla Girls. Saw the two founding members speak in costume during my last semester @ UNT before I graduated. They are big art & film history revisionists.
Its not about re-writing what really happened, but rather shedding light on relevant artists who happen to be female or minority yet never made the history book cut.
that part is good stuff. adding to is cool. taking away is not.
kinda like why i get annoyed at muslim clerics saying hitler didn't kill a bunch of jews & gypsies as genocide.
or our last president saying he didn't get money from enron.
or minorities thinking that all white ppl have scrilla & have a 100% get out of jail free card. some of them do, but the trailer trash does not get a pass & they are oh so fully white bread.
how are we going to improve the trailer ppl & prevent idiocracy if they aren't allowed equal access to affordable education because of the generalized & racist assumption that all white folks can afford to go to college.
stuff like that irks me.
